Jay-Z, who has been an ardent supporter of President Obama since his 2008 campaign, has recently co-signed the president’s views on same-sex marriage.
Jigga was in Philadelphia Monday (May 14) to announce his plans for a new music festival when he found himself answering questions about marriage rights. CNN’s Poppy Harlow grabbed him for a quick chat about the President’s recent remarks in which he said gays should be allowed to marry because it’s “the right thing to do.”
Jay-Z echoed the president’s sentiment.
“I’ve always thought it as something that was still holding the country back,” Jay-Z said, referring to the laws that bar gays from marrying in all but six states and Washington, D.C. “What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. It’s no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination plain and simple.”
When asked if he thought the president’s stance would lose him votes among minority voters come election time, Jay-Z’s responded: “It’s really not about votes. It’s about people.”
