Lionel Richie has been hospitalised after being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm.

The 77-year-old singer underwent a minimally invasive procedure known as an ablation, with his representative saying the procedure went well and Richie is recovering.

The health issue has forced the cancellation of three upcoming dates on his Sing a Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.

Richie plans to take some time away from performing before returning to the stage.
