Ye has returned to his hometown of Chicago for a ceremony honouring his late mother, Dr. Donda West.

A section of 78th Street on Chicago’s South Side has been officially named “Dr. Donda West Way,” recognising her contributions to education, literature and culture.

Dr. West was a professor and former chair of the English Department at Chicago State University, where she also established the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing.

Ye attended the ceremony and personally unveiled the street sign bearing his mother’s name but did not address the gathering.
