Shakira and Jennifer Lopez Put on the Best Super Bowl Halftime Show in Years

February 3, 2020

This year’s halftime show featured Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, in a much-anticipated performance. It kicked off with an army of scarlet-clad dancers supporting a glittering Shakira as she launched into “She-Wolf.” Shakira then dove into a medley that included “Whenever, Wherever”, “Empire,” “Hips Don’t Lie,” and a cover of Cardi B’s “I Like It,” before going solo for a seductive dance routine that involved complicated maneuvers with rope. Shakira pulled off stints with both an electric guitar and at a drumkit, and even managed to crowd-surf with grace—what can’t she do?

Matching her incredible energy was Jennifer Lopez, who gave the crowd what it wanted: a medley of many of her hit songs, from “Jenny From the Block” to “On the Floor,” and “Get Right.” Clad in a silver bodysuit, Lopez showed off the pole skills she learned for her role in Hustlers, confidently supporting herself in midair before bringing it back to 1999 with “Waiting for Tonight.”

Bad Bunny and J. Balvin both showed up onstage for impressive guest spots, before a choir of children, led by Lopez’s daughter Emme in a very sweet cameo, supported Lopez on “Let’s Get Loud.” In the show’s final touch, Lopez—dressed in a feathery double-sided Puerto Rican flag—joined Shakira to dance, in matching metallic outfits, putting an end to one of the most memorable halftime performances in recent memory.

At 43 and 50, respectively, Shakira and Lopez are two of the oldest women to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show; together, they put on a show that felt utterly modern and relevant—not to mention extremely GIF-worthy.
