MARIAH CAREY REPORTEDLY BEING SUED FOR STEALING HIT SINGLE ‘ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU’

July 22, 2022

It looks like Mariah Carey is being sued for her mega hit, ‘All I Want For Christmas.’

According to TMZ, Carey is being sued for copyright infringement by Andy Stone. Stone says he co-wrote and recorded a song called “All I Want For Christmas Is You” a couple years before Carey released her Christmas jingle.

In the lawsuit obtained by TMZ, Stone claims he “recorded his back in 1989 in Nashville, and says it got extensive airplay and even made it to the Billboard charts during the 1993 Christmas season, and he even filmed a music video.”

Mariah Carey released her hit in 1994, and it went on to become a huge success. Mariah and Stone’s song have no similarities aside from the title. Andy Stone is suing Carey $20 million in damages. “Plaintiff [Stone] personally requested that Defendants [Carey and Afanasieff] cease and desist from further distribution of Plaintiff’s work,” the suit reads in part. “Despite Plaintiff’s request, Defendants continue to exploit Plaintiff’s work ‘All I Want for Christmas is You,’ reaping tremendous financial awards and other pecuniary benefits to the detriment of Plaintiff.”

Mariah’s Christmas song broke all kinds of records as it hit the billion streaming mark on Spotify, and according to reports – earns her about 7 figures per year. A source claims, “Mariah can sit on her a** for the rest of her life and ONLY promote AIWFC and still be a millionaire.”

The song also set Spotify’s most streamed track on Spotify in 24 hours (female) record in 2019. “WOW,” Carey tweeted in 2020. “I know people think I’m making “coin” (lil’ secret: artists make very little from streams) but the real reason I’m sitting here in astonishment & gratitude is seeing the joy this little song I wrote brings to people. THANK YOU & MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!”

Mariah has yet to respond to the lawsuit claims.
